AMA District III - Ohio, Pennsylvania & West Virginia
Model Aviation has been a major part of my life starting in my youth in the late 60s. As with most modelers of my generation, the passion for model aviation started with building rubber powered models, moving into U-control with Cox plastic models and many of the popular profiles sold at the local hobby stores. I also tried my hand at glow powered and free flight.
My grandfather helped me get started into RC in 1970 and I have not looked back.
My particular interest in RC is fixed wing scale and it is focused on early aviation: specifically, WWI and WWII. I have competed and won at the NATS in RC Fixed Wing Scale and other local NASA events. I enjoy building from plans as well as my own designs and have been awarded trophies for my building abilities.
I am a co-sponsor in my local club of a program called RC101. Its purpose is to pass on building techniques used in our hobby. In my early days of RC, I built a few of the commercial electronic kits, which was the impetus of choosing electrical engineering as a career. I have served over the years in a multitude of AMA club positions, i.e. President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer and Safety Officers.
I joined the AMA in the late 70s. In 1984 I formed a local club that was a chapter of the International Miniature Aircraft Association (IMAA). I hold a private pilot certificate with instrument rating, and I have an A&P certificate for a homebuilt. I am a graduate of Indiana State University with a BS in Electronics and Computer Technology. I am a retired engineer with the vast majority of my career as a controls engineer.
As 2023 ends I would like to reflect upon my experiences as the District III Vice President. I began this journey in 2012 and after four terms (12 years) I felt it was time to retire and turn the controls over to a new pilot. Words cannot express what an honor it has been to serve the AMA and the members of District III (OH-PA-WV). I welcomed discussing AMA business with all of you and thoroughly enjoyed flying at your club fields. I was able to attend events that I previously only dreamed about, and I participated in your club anniversary celebrations, meetings, weddings and more. The best thing however was making new friends with modelers in District III and throughout the country. I hope you know I did my best to represent your needs to AMA. I want to personally thank the Associate VP’s and the AMA members of DIII for the volunteer work that you do to help AMA. The AMA is in a better place because of folks like you. Thank you to both Associate VP’s Jeff Black and Randy Adams for stepping up and running for the District III Vice President position. After excellent campaigns by both individuals Randy Adams won the election by a scant 16 votes! I wish Randy Adams the best of luck as the new DIII Vice President. Knowing Randy as I do, I am confident that District III will continue the tradition of being among the best and most active districts in the country. Finally, I wish every AMA member could witness the hard work by the AMA staff and the Executive Council. Their dedication and passion of our hobby and to the members is why we are still flying today in this time of government over regulation. THANK YOU to everyone that made this one of the greatest experiences of my life and I look forward to your fellowship and flying with you in the years to come. Stay safe and fly safely.
