Debbie Butler-Case, Jim's sister, wrote the following..
My brother, James Butler, known by many as “Jim” and some as “ Sergeant”, suffered a cardiac event one week ago today suffering a severe anoxic brain injury. He took his last breath around 2:30 pm. today, January 6th, 2025.
He is truly a very special person, my big brother, and my hero. I am heartbroken!
James graduated from St. Albans High in 1976 and was a very talented drummer. He served in the U.S. Army and then retired from St. Albans Police Department as a Sergeant with 24 years of service as a canine handler. He is a published writer, a talented and published photographer, and he also created many model R C airplanes which he flew with CAP cadets as well young people from other areas.
He valued serving others and taking great pride in his hometown of St. Albans!
FLY HIGH MY BROTHER!
As 2023 ends I would like to reflect upon my experiences as the District III Vice President. I began this journey in 2012 and after four terms (12 years) I felt it was time to retire and turn the controls over to a new pilot. Words cannot express what an honor it has been to serve the AMA and the members of District III (OH-PA-WV). I welcomed discussing AMA business with all of you and thoroughly enjoyed flying at your club fields. I was able to attend events that I previously only dreamed about, and I participated in your club anniversary celebrations, meetings, weddings and more. The best thing however was making new friends with modelers in District III and throughout the country. I hope you know I did my best to represent your needs to AMA. I want to personally thank the Associate VP’s and the AMA members of DIII for the volunteer work that you do to help AMA. The AMA is in a better place because of folks like you. Thank you to both Associate VP’s Jeff Black and Randy Adams for stepping up and running for the District III Vice President position. After excellent campaigns by both individuals Randy Adams won the election by a scant 16 votes! I wish Randy Adams the best of luck as the new DIII Vice President. Knowing Randy as I do, I am confident that District III will continue the tradition of being among the best and most active districts in the country. Finally, I wish every AMA member could witness the hard work by the AMA staff and the Executive Council. Their dedication and passion of our hobby and to the members is why we are still flying today in this time of government over regulation. THANK YOU to everyone that made this one of the greatest experiences of my life and I look forward to your fellowship and flying with you in the years to come. Stay safe and fly safely.
